The Foster Family have been living and working while homesteading in Coos and Curry County Oregon since 1868.  They ran logging operations, raised sheep and cows on ranch land in the Langlois area while raising families.  Returning from the Army of Occupation in Austria, Wayne Foster continued the family business and eventually converted 32 acres of land in the Croft Lake area into cranberry bogs.  Croft Lake is just about 9 miles South of Bandon Oregon and is ideal for growing cranberries due to the sandy soil, ample water supply and mild autumn which allows cranberries to put on their distinctive deep red hue and build a higher sugar content.

In the 1990's cranberry prices took a turn for the worse and many local farmers were going bankrupt while others were desperately trying to find new markets for their uniquely red and sweet Southern Oregon cranberries.  In 1995, Wayne began experimenting with making cranberry wine.

I decided to go into wine if I could make a decent and consistent product.  I traveled all over the state looking for someone to take my berries and make a batch of wine, and folks kept telling me it couldn’t be done.

Over the course 4 years Wayne, his family and friends (some whom were *guinea pigs!) developed a cranberry wine "that was pretty good stuff". And in 2004 Sea Mist Cranberry wine was born!

Wayne, Steve, and the rest of the Foster Family continue to produce new varieties incorporating other local berries including the award winning Cranberry-Blueberry, Cranberry-Raspberry and Semi-Sweet Cranberry wines to much success.
